Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, founding member and keyboardist, Kevin Johnston, is the Captain of the ship. During his youth, a daily regimen of Johnny Rivers, the Mamas and the Papas, the Beach Boys, the Beatles and just about everything in between helped Kevin to forge a love of music that would last a lifetime. Growing up in the late seventies and early eighties, he became a part of the quickly emerging world of electronic music. Soon Kevin’s interests were focused on the world of computer music, synthesizers and MIDI.

For the next 3 years, Kevin would spend his summers living in the beach resort town of Ocean City, Maryland. His love for the ocean, the beach and surfing was also at work, unknowingly laying the ground work for the future. Those summer seasons left an indelible salt water stain and it was during this time period that Kevin became acquainted with the “island style” attitude and the music of singer/songwriter, Jimmy Buffett.

After returning home from the beach, Kevin realized that in order to accomplish some of his musical goals, he would need to update his gear setup quite a bit. Basically a beach bum with no budget, Kevin entered the work force as a messenger for a Philadelphia-based international shipping company. He took quite an interest in the shipping business and started a climb on the corporate ladder that would last for almost 17 years, as he worked his way from messenger to Branch Manager for the German firm, Schenker, Inc., one of the largest shipping companies in the world.

During those seventeen years, Kevin settled down, managed to marry his high school sweetheart, bought a house, and had two beautiful children – oh, and started Captain Quint - not necessarily in that order.

In September of 2000, after several stints with local classic rock bands that brought about little money, lots of late nights, and a lack of satisfaction, Kevin brought his idea of a Buffett-style band to reality. Captain Quint debuted as a three-piece band, but quickly grew in size and popularity. Kevin soon saw an opportunity to move Quint in a slightly different direction.

In the fall of 2002, Kevin started writing songs for Captain Quint’s debut CD, Pineapple Jam. He completed production of the CD in June of 2003, recording much of the material at The Orca, his studio in Abingdon, Maryland. With the success of Pineapple Jam, Kevin tendered his resignation, left the international business world and started concentrating on Quint’s quest for world domination.

When not touring with Captain Quint, Kevin spends his time with his wife Pam, daughter Delaney, and son Ian… and “aboard” The Orca, where time is put into songwriting and production work for Captain Quint and Kevin’s other projects.
